Synchronica plc (AIM: SYNC, TSX-V: SYN), the international provider of next-generation mobile messaging services, has, in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks, secured a contract and initial purchase order from a Yemeni mobile operator for Synchronica's award-winning mobile messaging product Mobile Gateway. |
This is Synchronica's 70th mobile operator customer. The operator plans to use Mobile Gateway to offer a mass market push email service to its subscribers.
As ownership of basic handsets continues to dominate the Yemeni mobile market, Mobile Gateway's email-to-SMS and email-to-MMS functionality will provide mobile messaging services to any mobile phone in use today.
Mid-range feature phones and high-end smartphones will be supported with industry-standard push email and synchronization services.
Synchronica will also provide the operator with professional services and support.
Compound Annual Growth Rate of 40.26 Percent
Synchronica believes that in emerging markets where consumers are mostly reliant on internet cafes, the mobile phone is becoming the preferred avenue to accessing digital content.
According to a recent study from the Arab Advisors Group, mobile penetration in Yemen had soared to 41.29 percent at the end of the first quarter 2010, courtesy of subscription increases between 2005 and 2009 at a compound annual growth rate of 40.26 percent.
This contrasts strongly with data from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) which suggests that only 1.6 percent of Yemen's population have access to the internet.
Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, says: "Mobile messaging is increasingly being seen to be a must have for professionals, consumers, and youngsters alike; enabling operators in high-growth emerging markets to differentiate their offerings with innovative value-added services."
"With Mobile Gateway, users can connect to their favorite internet communities, regardless of the type of mobile phone they own, while operators reap from the churn-reducing stickiness of a product which customers would lose should they ever defect to a rival."
"We're pleased to have reached the milestone of 70 operator customers as we continue to expand our market share in emerging markets."
