Wireless subscriber crosses 700 million mark (TID)
The number of telephone subscribers in India increased to 742.12 Million at the end of October. Wireless subscriber base increased from 687.71 Million in September-2010 to 706.69 Million at the end of October-2010 registering a growth of 2.76%.
Patil seeks information from DoT on 2G allocation (ET)
The one-man panel constituted by the government to look into any possible irregularities in the award of telecom licences and spectrum between 2001 and 2009 has sought to know from DoT if allocation of 2G spectrum has to comply with CVC guidelines.
Raja again called for questioning by CBI (ET)
Raja, who had earlier expressed his inability to appear before the agency, was questioned at length on the circumstances leading to spectrum allocation which has been criticised severely by Central Vigilance Commission and the Comptroller and Auditor General.

Banglalink, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orascom Telecom and a leading operator in Bangladesh, has won the International Association of the Money Transfer Networks (IAMTN) “Best New Service” Award for Mobile Remittance services, powered by Comviva’s mobiquity mMoney. This is the first international remittance service available via the mobile phone in South Asia. Remittance inflows contribute USD 10 billion in foreign exchange annually equivalent to 9% of Bangladesh’s GDP.

Spread of 3G telephony to push VAS industry in 2011 (ET)
"The key drivers for the growth of 3G in India will be innovative content, improved customer services and increased affordability of handsets as well as availability of value added services," said global consultancy firm KPMG. "These drivers will help ensure growth of 3G not just in urban areas but in rural areas as well," it added. Currently, the VAS market is worth Rs 110-120 billion (Rs 11-12,000 crore), about 10 per cent of the total revenues of the wireless industry.

Value-added service cos seek clarity on TRAI norm (HBL)
The new Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) regulation, which seeks to rein in telemarketers and commercial calls, has left VAS (value-added services) companies both happy and unhappy.Mr A.R. Vishwanath, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IMImobile, said the regulation needed clarity, particularly on the definition of a telemarketer. “VAS companies aggregate messages from different telemarketers for service providers. We are a subset of service providers and are not telemarketers ourselves,” he said.

Sony Ericsson to expand Xperia line (TOI)
Sony Ericsson is all set to expand its Xperia smartphone family. According to reports, the company will be unveiling new Xperia handsets in February at the Mobile World Congress expo. Rumours point to Xperia X12 launch. The smartphone is speculated to be based on Android 2.3, with a 4.2-inch touchscreen and a Snapdragon processor. Other rumoured specs include 720p recording from an 8.1-megapixel camera sensor, HDMI output, and 802.11n Wi-Fi.
Google's Nexus S works fine at 60,000 feet (ET)
Google techies have been taken by pleasant surprise after Nexus S, the new Android smart phone the company launched early December, was found ticking even from the Earth's outer atmosphere - at 60,000 feet. The tiny Androids strapped to seven payloads to test the outer limits of Nexus S were carried into the Earth's outer atmosphere using weather balloons, the report said.
Sales of Samsung Star Mobile Phone tops 30 Million Units (C-N)
The Star (S5230) reached this milestone faster than any other devices in Samsung's history, launched in May 2009. The Star has consistently sold well since its release, hitting the 10 million sales mark after only six months and 20 million in just one year. Across Europe, where it first became available, the Star has sold 15 million units; it achieved similar success in Latin America (5 million units), Russia (3 million units) and China (1 million units). Notably, the Samsung Star has also topped bestseller phone lists in Germany and Austria.
