Synchronica wins fourth contract in Africa
Synchronica plc, the AIM listed mobile email and data synchronisation provider, announces that it has signed a contract for US$ 270,000 with a Southern-African mobile operator for an initial 100,000 user license for its award winning mobile email product Mobile Gateway, as well as a contract for ongoing professional services.
The mobile operator is part of a larger group (“the Group”), which has several operations in Central Africa. As mentioned in the announcement on the 23 October, Synchronica has been in discussions with several subsidiaries of the Group and this is now the third order from a subsidiary of the Group. This is the fourth deal for Synchronica in this region this year and the 11th operator contract announced by the Company in 2009.
The operator will use Synchronica’s Mobile Gateway technology to offer a push email and synchronisation service to its subscribers. Synchronica’s industry-standard technology requires no additional software client to be downloaded to the handset and enables push email for the broadest range of handsets, from high-end Smartphones to low-cost entry level devices.
According to an Ernst & Young study (Africa Connected: A telecommunications growth story), the African telecommunications market is expected to grow faster than any other region over the next three to five years and with a compound annual growth rate since 2002 of nearly 50% it is a key growth market. Market penetration of mobile phones in Africa has now reached 37% and is expected to rise to more than 60% by 2012.
Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica, said, “Our fourth customer win in the fast growing emerging Africa telecommunications market shows the attractiveness of our offering in regions where PC ownership is low and where operators can offer email and mobile synchronisation direct to customers with any type of handset, particularly to those with the most basic mobile phones. Operators in Africa have the opportunity to establish the mobile phone as the primary device for mobile Internet access, and Synchronica provides a key component to turn this vision into reality.”
