  • Saves Rs.25cr by ensuring project completion on time

Goa, September 10, 2009: MTS India, the mobile telephony service brand of Sistema Shyam TeleServices Ltd (SSTL), proved its technological edge when its Chief Information Officer (CIO), Mr. Rajeev Batra was felicitated with a CIO100 Award in a ceremony at Goa, for bringing in innovation in the IT framework created for roll out and operations of MTS India. The IT framework comprised of the Classic IT, IN, VAS and CCT (Call Centre Technology). The esteemed CIO 100 Award is an annual feature of the IDG Group that started in the United States about 20 years ago and was rolled out in India 4 years back. The Awards were presented by noted technocrat and former President of NASSCOM, Mr. Kiran Karnik.

MTS India was awarded for its planned IT framework that meets the fast-scaling requirements of its aggressive roll-out of telecom services in the country. Some of the key initiatives that were appreciated by the jury included:

  • Setting up green data centres and encouraging green IT usage in across offices

  • Virtualization for optimizing server and storage hardware

  • Installing the latest SIGTRAN signaling technology

  • Adopting a strategy of outsourcing components of IT services

While receiving the award on behalf of the company, Mr. Rajeev Batra said, “It is a great honor for MTS India to be ranked in the league of top 100 companies in the country that are transforming business through innovative technology. Being a new entrant in the Indian telecom market, one of our key challenges was to quickly and efficiently launch our services across the country, which required scalable and robust IT infrastructure to support such fast-paced growth. We began deployment of IT framework for our services in March 2009 with an investment of Rs. 150 crores. We have already launched our services in 6 telecom circles with a current subscriber base over 1.7 million. We will cover all telecom circles across India by Q3 of 2010.”

“Effective planning and impeccable team effort helped us deploy systems that can manage our expansive growth across newer geographies within India comfortably and seamlessly. Having been able to launch services on schedule helped us save approximately Rs.25 crores by using innovative ways of enterprise architecture design and best practices underlined in ITIL and BSM,” added Mr. Batra.

During this project, MTS has set industry benchmarks by deploying several innovations like CDMA mobile services used the concept of RUIMS (analogous to SIMS in GSM) that delinked handset from the mobile number. This initiative has unveiled a whole new world for CDMA subscribers in India who now have a choice to select the CDMA operator without the need to change their handset.
