Japan’s SOFTBANK TELECOM selects Alcatel-Lucent’s 100 Gigabit-capable optical solution

100 Gigabit solution being demoed at Interop 2010 Tokyo supporting live show traffic

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NSE: ALU) has further strengthened its cooperation with SOFTBANK TELECOM Corp. (SBTM), one of Japan’s leading operators, to upgrade its backbone network in support of its transformation for fixed and mobile convergence.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its next-generation optical networking solution, which scales up to 100 gigabit per second (100G) to dramatically increase performance and service speeds, covering the country’s three largest cities of Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, where half of the Japanese population resides.

Alcatel-Lucent will supply its 100G-capable 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) featuring next-generation coherent technology to dramatically improve capacity scalability. As a result, SBTM’s backbone network will need fewer regeneration sites, significantly reducing the operational costs and power consumption. Alcatel-Lucent is currently showcasing its 100G solution, based on the 1830 PSS, at the Interop Tokyo 2010 event, where it is supporting live traffic with unprecedented speed and performance. At 100Gs, a 2-hour high-definition movie can be transmitted in less than 9 seconds.
