Chunghwa Telecom and Alcatel-Lucent to deploy Taiwan’s first GPON network

Paris, 24 February, 2011

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has engaged in a optic-fiber network project with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan’s largest telecommunications provider,to build the country’s first gigabit passive optical network (GPON).

The fiber-based infrastructure will enable Chunghwa Telecom to provide state-of-the-art triple-play services to its residential and business customers. Commercial operation of the initial phase of Chunghwa’s GPON network is set to commence by Q3 of 2011.

Chunghwa Telecom said that as they are upgrading their services to create the best user-experience for both enterprise and residential customers, Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution has been one of the best choices because of its high efficiency, stability, quality of service and professional services expertise. Alcatel-Lucent’s award-winning solution will help Chunghwa push forward their optic-fiber network initiative and further drive the adoption of fiber-based triple-play services across Taiwan.

“This GPON project is a key milestone helping lead Taiwan into a new era of ultra high-speed service creation, delivery and innovation,” said Rajeev Singh-Molares, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities in the Asia Pacific region. “It also reflects our strong commitment to the development of broadband infrastructure in Taiwan, having already supplied the Taiwanese market with xDSL, IP routing, optical transport and mobile solutions.”

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU)for the delivery of ultra-high-speed services to both residential and business users. The GPON platform will be complemented by the Alcatel-Lucent 5520 Access Management System (AMS) – Alcatel-Lucent’s next-generation element management system that covers the entire ISAM product portfolio, encompassing DSL as well as fiber-based access. Alcatel-Lucent will also provide its professional services expertise – including software integration, as well as network management system installation and commissioning.

Alcatel-Lucent is a worldwide leader in the deployment of GPON technology, having been involved already in more than 100 FTTH projects – over 85 of which are based on GPON. Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON customer base not only consists of leading operators such as Verizon, France Telecom, Portugal Telecom and Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited, but also includes a considerable number of utility companies as well as municipalities and regions around the world.
