Alcatel-Lucent to deploy GPON-based fiber-optic network for ZON Multimedia

Lisbon, 24 February, 2010

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that it has been selected by ZON Multimedia, the leader of the Pay TV market in Portugal, to supply the active equipments necessary for the deployment of a gigabit passive optical network (GPON)-based fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) architecture that will support the delivery of a wide range of next-generation broadband services - such as advanced high-definition television (HDTV) services, VoIP and video on demand.

ZON Multimedia will leverage Alcatel-Lucent’s award-winning GPON platform in new expansion areas and in a network development environment where HFC/FTTH technologies coexist. ZON Multimedia will also rely on Alcatel-Lucent’s expertise in professional services -including installation, OSS integration, commissioning services and maintenance.

“Having over 1.5 million customers, ZON is the largest pay-TV operator in Portugal. As a leader, we want to keep on providing end-users with the best solutions on the market,” said Paulo Ribeiro, Board Member of ZON TV Cabo. “Though our network is very competitive and allowing us to successfully offer bandwidth-demanding services, such as HDTV and high-speed Internet, we decided to explore parallel ways to bring the best of multimedia applications to our customers. Alcatel-Lucent’s proven GPON solution and its experience in deploying fiber networks will help us introduce this new technology into our network – enabling us to expand our product and services offer to our customers. This technological option of investing on FTTH in geographical areas still with no coverage was already part of our plans of geographic expansion and it was already foreseen on our investment plans. It is our expectation to keep up with the annual rhythm of the networks extension of 50 to 100 thousand homes passed within the next years,” he added.

“Supporting a major cable operator like ZON Multimedia to introduce GPON into its network highlights Alcatel-Lucent’s unique ability to propose innovative solutions which meet each customer’s specific needs. Alcatel-Lucent is actively engaged to help cable operators transform their access networks into a cost-effective, service-oriented platform,” said Federico Guillén, president of Alcatel-Lucent’s activities for Spain and Portugal.

Alcatel-Lucent will deploy its 7342 Intelligent Services Access Manager Fiber-to-the-User (ISAM FTTU) GPON-based platform, which smoothly integrates with legacy voice and RF video networks. Alcatel-Lucent is also supplying its 5520 Access Management System (AMS) as well as a range of optical network terminals (ONTs) to install at the end-users’ premises, and will provide ZON Multimedia with its comprehensive professional services expertise - including deployment, integration and maintenance.

Alcatel-Lucent is the worldwide leader in the fixed broadband access market, supporting the largest mass deployments of video, voice and data services. Today, one out of three fixed broadband subscribers around the world is served through an access network provided by Alcatel-Lucent. Alcatel-Lucent is currently involved in over 95 FTTH projects worldwide, over 80 of which are with GPON.
