Alcatel-Lucent brings Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) to Finland

Last year, the Finnish government launched an ambitious broadband project to provide 98% of all Finnish households with 100Mbps broadband by the end of 2015. It goes without saying that this is quite a challenge for the Finnish telecom service providers - since Finland is a large country with many sparsely populated areas.

SSP Yhtiöt Oy, as part of the Finnet Group which comprises 28 small and mid-sized telecom service providers all across Finland, has a crucial role to play in realizing the Finnish national broadband plan.

To this end, SSP Yhtiöt Oy, with the help of Anvia (also part of the Finnet Group), has engaged in solution testing and evaluation, and has ultimately selected Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON technology.

Alcatel-Lucent is providing SSP with its GPON-based IP access platform, and its portfolio of customer premises equipment. SSP has opted for GPON technology – as it allows the service provider to reach its subscribers in a cost-effective and reliable way. GPON’s key benefits – as listed by the customer – include: operational cost savings due to its passive (maintenance-free) outside plant, shorter repair times when fiber cables are damaged, easier network design, and redundancy closer to the end-customer.

Pertti Tukia, Country Sales Manager at Alcatel-Lucent Suomi Oy said, “This contract with SSP is a breakthrough for Alcatel-Lucent’s GPON solution in Finland, and comes on top of several other GPON contracts won with operators in the Nordics over the last 12 months. This deal positions Alcatel-lucent as one of the leading GPON suppliers in Finland.”
